Winter School (By Tessa Thornley)

Recently I went to the New Zealand School of Dance winter school program in the first week of the holidays, and it was one of the best experiences of my life.I learned so much and really enjoyed the overall experience of being there. The reason I got to go was because of my amazing dance teacher Miss Monique, who gave me a scholarship last year to go which was incredibly kind of her, so thank you so much it really meant a lot to me.

Basically in a nutshell, what I learned at winter school was a lot! To start of with in my classical class the main thing the teacher would say to everyone was 60/40. This basically means that there needs to 60% of your body weight on the balls of the feet and 40% on the heel. One other thing that really stands out to me now is what my RAD teacher always said: to make sure you can see from your forearm down to you hand through your peripheral vision, otherwise your second position will either be too wide or too small.

At winter school I was placed in this group called amber, and no one else i knew was placed in that group, so the one thing I was most scared about when going to winter school was not knowing anyone and not making friends and being lonely. But as soon as I got to my first class, I made some new friends which was great and I never knew why I was so worried because everyone was so nice and everyone was going through the same thing. So that turned out really well.

The last thing I want to say is another thank you to Miss Monique, without whom, I never would have been able to go to winter school in the first place, so thank you!

From Tessa.
